Buddhism is a religion that is practiced worldwide. The basic Buddhist philosophy is interdependence, and its practice is non-violence and compassion, conviction overriding faith. It is also often referred to as a science mind and is adaptable to the cultural practices of its followers. It is believed that there are as many as 500 million people around the world, which would represent between 7% and 8% of the world’s total population, who are adherents of this religion. For such a religion, spread across many different countries, races and cultures, differences could emerge in the way Buddhists understand and practice their own religion, within their respective contexts and environments.
Broadly speaking, Buddhists can be categorised into those who follow the Pali tradition and those who ascribe to the Sanskrit tradition. Down the ages, there have been attempts by Buddhist teachers, scholars and leaders of the Pali and Sanskrit traditions to convene to discuss and set up international Buddhist organizations, in order to appreciate and rationalise differences in practices of various Buddhist communities in this world. The current era of internet communication and fast connectivity bring a unique opportunity for easier access to a virtual sangha community and on-line discussions.
We are hopeful that such rich dialogues will bring a closer understanding and greater harmony, fostering a closer relationship among organisers, speakers, translators, and the audience.
Over the years, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has put in a lot of effort to bring more harmony amongst the holders of different religions and faiths. Therefore, with this inspiration, we hope we can continue to strengthen the model of building trust, progress and success in the Buddhist intra-faith relationship; and thereby, sharing this wisdom with the wider inter-faith world as well.
We look forward to your virtual presence and thank you for your support for this inaugural conference.
